Subhashitas in Sanskrit are like treasures. Some of the previously read Subhashitas served as the inspiration for this poem. The students of today are not the same as those of the past. Many students today merely wish to pass in order to somehow acquire a government job. Few other students are wealthy and apathetic in their academics. For them, student life consists solely of enjoyment. A true student is one who actively pursues knowledge. Therefore, each student should adhere to specific rules to become a true citizen. Students must have a strong desire to learn. He should avoid being lazy and taking a wrong path. He needs to be pure and understand that knowledge, not wealth, is what matters most.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳು ಎಂದರೆ ಅದು ನಿಧಿಯಿದ್ದಂತೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಓದಿದ್ದ ಕೆಲವು ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಈ ಪದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಹಿಂದಿನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಇಂದಿನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಅಜಗಜಾಂತರ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಇಂದು ಅನೇಕ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ತೇರ್ಗಡೆ ಹೊಂದಿ, ಹೇಗಾದರೂ ಮಾಡಿ ಒಂದು ಸರ್ಕಾರೀ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಗಿಟ್ಟಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಆತುರದಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಹೇರಳವಾದ ಆಸ್ತಿಯಿದ್ದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಜೀವನ ಎಂದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕೇವಲ ಮೋಜು.

ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಎಂದರೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಅರಸಿ ಬಂದವನು ಎಂದರ್ಥ. ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಮತ ಅಥವಾ ಧರ್ಮಗಳ ಕಟ್ಟುಪಾಡಿಗಿಂತ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸುವುದೇ ಧರ್ಮವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯು ಕೆಲವು ಪಾಲನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪಾಲಿಸಿದರೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸತ್ಪ್ರಜೆಯಾಗುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂದೇಹವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯು ಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಲು ಹಾತೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿರಬೇಕು. ಸೋಮಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ದುರ್ಮಾರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಬಾರದು. ಅಂತರಂಗ ಹಾಗು ಬಹಿರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶುದ್ಧನಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಹಣವಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅರಿತಿರಬೇಕು.

ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಅರಸಿ ಬಂದ ಮಕ್ಕಳು

ಗುರು ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನು ಆದರಿಸಬೇಕು ಜ್ಞಾನಕೆ ಹಾತೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿರಬೇಕು ಜ್ಞಾನ ಸುಧಾರಕ ನಾಗಬೇಕು // ಕಲಿಯುವುದಷ್ಟೇ ಧ್ಯೇಯ ವಾಗಬೇಕು ಸೋಮಾರಿತನವನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತೊಗೆ ಬೇಕು ತೇಜವಂತ ನಾಗಲು ಪಣ ತೊಡಬೇಕು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡೆನೆಂದು ಸಾರಬೇಕು // ಅಂತರಂಗ ಬಹಿರಂಗ ಶುದ್ಧಿ ಇರಬೇಕು ಆಸ್ತಿಪಾಸ್ತಿ ಹಣದಾಸೆ ದೂರವಿಡಬೇಕು ಜಗದೊಡೆಯನಿಗೆ ಋಣಿಯಾಗಬೇಕು ಸಹಬಾಳ್ವೆ ಪುಣ್ಯವೆಂದು ಅರಿಯಬೇಕು //
