ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸದ ಕಡೆಯ ದಿನ ಅಂದರೆ ಅಮಾವಾಸ್ಯೆಯೇ ಭೀಮನ ಅಮಾವಾಸ್ಯೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸದ ಗಾಳಿಯ ಆರ್ಭಟ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿ ಶ್ರಾವಣ ಮಾಸದ ಮಳೆಯ ಆರಂಭವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.  ಈ ಶುಭದಿನದಂದು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ವ್ರತವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಿ ಮನೆಯ ಗಂಡಸರಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ದಿನದಂದೇ ಶಿವನು ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಒಲಿದು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ಭೀಮನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ದಿನವೂ ಇದೇ ದಿನವಾಗಿದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಭೀಮ ಈಶ್ವರ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಸೇರಿ ಭೀಮೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿ ಅಂದು ಜ್ಯೋತಿಯನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟು ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಜ್ಯೋತಿ ಭೀಮೇಶ್ವರ ವ್ರತ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಪುರುಷ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ವ್ರತ ಇದಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. 

ಮಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅಥವಾ ತಂಬಿಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ ದೀಪವನ್ನು ಪೂಜೆಗೆಂದು ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ದೀಪದ ಜೋಡಿಯೇ ಶಿವ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯರ ಸಾಂಕೇತಿಕ ರೂಪವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಂತೆ ದೀಪಗಳು ಕತ್ತಲನ್ನು ಅಂದರೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ತೊಲಗಿಸಿ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಅಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದ್ದನ್ನು ಕೊಡಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಇದೆ. 

ಕೆಲವರು ಈ ದಿನದಂದು ಕಡುಬನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಅದರೊಳಗೆ ನಾಣ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಹುಡುಗರು ಇದನ್ನು ಒಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ಹೀಗೆ ಒಡೆಯುವುದನ್ನು ಭಂಡಾರ ಒಡೆಯುವುದು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಒಲಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮೃತನಾದ ಗಂಡನನ್ನು ಮರಳಿ ಪಡೆದಳು ಎಂಬ ಕಥೆಯೂ ಈ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕಿದೆ. 

ಆಚರಣೆ ಪದ್ದತಿಗಳು ಏನೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಮೂಲ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಮನೆಯ ಮಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟುಗೂಡಿಸುವುದು. ಇದು ಹಬ್ಬವೊಂದರ ಆಚರಣೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನೆರವೇರುತ್ತದೆ. ವ್ರತಕ್ಕೆಂದು ಒಂದು ಕಥೆಯೂ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ ವ್ರತದ ಆಚರಣೆಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಆ ಘಟನೆ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನೆಯ ಗಂಡಸರು ಹೆಂಗಸರ ಹಾಗು ಮನೆಮಂದಿಯ ಒಳಿತಿಗಾಗಿ ಜೀವನವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಸವೆಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಂಗಸರು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಗೌರವ ಈ ವ್ರತವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂದರೆ ಮನೆಯ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸದಸ್ಯರೂ ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಗೌರವ ಅದರಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಬದುಕಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದೇ ಇದರ ಉದ್ದೇಶ. 

ಭೀಮನ ಅಮಾವಾಸ್ಯೆ ಹಬ್ಬವು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಿ. 

The last day of the month of Ashadha is Amavasya. Shravan, the rainy season, officially begins at this time. Women fast on this auspicious day and offer prayers for their husbands' health. On this day, Parvati is said to have been married by Lord Shiva after he accepted her penance. Additionally, Bhima was born on this day. For worship, two clay or tambittu (sweet made from wheat flour) lamps are lit.  The lamps represent the goddess Parvati and the god Shiva.  In Hinduism, light is defined as the ability to bring about good and banish darkness.

Some folks keep coins inside the sweets on this day.  It is broken down by the young guys in the family.  "Bhandara breaking" is the term for this method of breaking.  According to the festival tale, the wife brought her deceased husband back to life on this auspicious day by worshipping Lord Shiva.
