ದೀನ ದಲಿತರ ಸೇವೆ ದೇವರ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮಿಗಿಲು

ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದವರಿಗೆ, ಅಸಹಾಯಕರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಅದು ದೇವರ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮಿಗಿಲು ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾರಾಂಶ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಧರ್ಮಗಳೂ ಇದನ್ನೇ ಸಾರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇಷ್ಟಾದರೂ ಇನ್ನೂ ಉಗ್ರರು, ಭಯೋತ್ಪಾದನೆ, ರಾಜಕೀಯ ದ್ವೇಷ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಶ್ರೀಸಾಮಾನ್ಯನನ್ನು ತತ್ತರ ಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಇಂಥವರಿಗೆ ಇಂತಹ ಸರಳ ಸತ್ಯ ಎಂದಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಾಗುತ್ತದೋ ದೇವರೇ ಬಲ್ಲ. 

ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ವಾಟ್ಸಾಪ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ, ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದವರಿಗೆ, ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದ್ದವರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುವುದು ದೇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಎಂಬ ಒಂದು ಸಂದೇಶ ಬಂತು. ನಾನು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಲಿಯೋ ಟಾಲ್ಸ್ಟಾಯ್ ಅವರ ಕಥೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಿದ್ದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಸಹಪಾಠಿ ಸನ್ಮತಿ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿ ನನಗೆ ಆ ಕಥೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಿದ್ದಳು. ಆಗ ನಾನು ಆ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಕಳಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡೆ. ಅಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸುವ ಬದಲು ನಾನೇ ಏಕೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಬಾರದು ಎನ್ನಿಸಿತು. ಆ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಅಸೆ ಮುಂಚಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಇತ್ತು. ಈ ನೆಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾರಾಂಶವನ್ನು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗೆ ಹೊಂದುವಂತೆ ಬರೆದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಸನ್ಮತಿ ಈ ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಳು. 

ಇಂದು ಅದೇ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ನಲ್ಲಿ, ಸ್ನೇಹಿತೆ ಸನ್ಮತಿಯ ನೆನಪಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ, 

ನಾನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಸುಮಾರು ಎಂಭತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಥೆ. ಆಗ ಕಾಲ ಇಂದಿನಷ್ಟು ಮುಂದುವರೆದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬಳಿಯ ಊರೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ, ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಎಂಬ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಹಿರಿಯರು ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ, ಬೇಕಾದಷ್ಟು ಭೂಮಿ ಇತ್ತು. ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಹಣದ ಮದವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬಹಳ ದೈವ ಭಕ್ತ. ದಯಾಳು. ಅವನ ಮಿತ್ರನಾದ ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಅಂತ ಸ್ಥಿತಿವಂತನೇನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ತಿನ್ನಲು ಉಣ್ಣಲು ಕೊರತೆ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನೂ ಸಹ ದೈವಭಕ್ತ, ಕರುಣಾಳು. ಈ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಅಸೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಅದೇನೆಂದರೆ "ಕಾಲ್ನಡಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ದೇವರ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರಬೇಕು" ಎಂದು. ಆಗ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು ಎಂದರೆ ಇಂದಿನಂತೆ ಕಾರು, ಬಸ್ಸು ಇರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ದುಡ್ಡಿದ್ದವರಿಗೆ ಎತ್ತಿನ ಗಾಡಿ, ಇಲ್ಲದವರಿಗೆ ಕಾಲ್ನಡಿಗೆ. ನಡೆದು ಹೋಗುವವರು ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಬರೆ, ಪಾತ್ರೆ ಗಳನ್ನೂ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಂಗುತ್ತಾ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕಡೆಗೂ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ, ಭೀಮಪ್ಪನ ಅಸೆ ಈಡೇರುವ ಕಾಲ ಬಂತು. ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೊರಟರು.

ರಾಮಪ್ಪನ ಬಳಿ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಹಣ ಇತ್ತು. ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೇ ಹಣ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಹೊರಟಿದ್ದ. ಕಾಲ್ನಡಿಗೆ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುವಾಗ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಜೆಯ ವೇಳೆ ಸಿಗುವ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ತಂಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಬಡಬಗ್ಗರಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೈಲಾದ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಆಗ ಇಂದಿನಂತೆ ಹೋಟೆಲ್ಗಳು ಇರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನೆಯವರೂ ಉದಾರವಾಗಿ ಅತಿಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಊಟ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೊರಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮರ್ಯಾದೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ದುಡ್ಡಿದ್ದವರು ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಇನ್ಯಾವುದೋ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ, ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಇಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಸುಖವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಅವರು ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗಿದಾಗ ಸಂಜೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಬಡತನ ಇತ್ತು. ಬದುಕು ನಡೆಸಲು ಜನ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ಭೀಮ್ಮಪ್ಪ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಮನ ಕರಗಿತು. ತಮ್ಮ ಹಣದಿಂದ ತಾವೇ ಬೇರೆಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಊಟ ತರಿಸಿ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಆದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ದಿನ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ? ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ತಾನು ಮುಂದೆ ಹೊರಡುವೆ ಎಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದ. ಆದರೆ ಭೀಮಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನರ ಬಡತನ ಕಂಡು ಕಣ್ತುಂಬಿ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಅವನು ನಾನು ಇನ್ನೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದಿನ ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದು ಬರುವೆ ಎಂದ. ರಾಮಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಇದ್ದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಇದನ್ನು ತಿರುಪತಿ ತಿಮ್ಮಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿಸಿಬಿಡು, ನಾನೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ದೈವೇಚ್ಛೆ ಯಂತೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದ. ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೊರಟ, ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಿಂತ.

ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ಆ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದ್ದು ಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಅನೇಕ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದ ಅನೇಕ ಸಲಹೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟ. ತಾನು ಇದ್ದ ಮನೆಯವರೆಲ್ಲ ಆರೋಗ್ಯವಂತರಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ ಅವರನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಕೊಂಡ. ಅವರಿಗೂ ಅನೇಕ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತ ಸಲಹೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟು ತನ್ನ ಕಾಲ ಮೇಲೆ ತಾವು ನಿಲ್ಲುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ. ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲಾ ಮಾಡುವ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಹಲವಾರು ದಿನಗಳು ಕಳೆದಿದ್ದವು. ಅವನ ಬಳಿ ಇದ್ದ ಹಣವೂ ಖಾಲಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಕನಸು ಕನಸಾಗಿಯೇ ಉಳಿಯಿತು. ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ತಾನು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಹಣವನ್ನು ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ, ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ನೆಪದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಬಡವರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದೆನಲ್ಲ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಸಾಕು ಎಂದು ತನ್ನ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೊರಟ.

ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ತಿರುಪತಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದ. ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು "ನೀನು ತಿರುಪತಿಯಿಂದ ಈಗ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀಯಾ?" ಎಂದ. ಆಗ ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ನಡೆದ ಕತೆಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಹೇಳಿದ. ಆಗ ರಾಮಪ್ಪ "ದೇವರ ದರ್ಶನ ಮುಖ್ಯ, ಅದು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ನೀನು ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಏಕೆ ಉಳಿದೆ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಂದುಬಿಡಬೇಕಿತ್ತು" ಎಂದ. ಆಗ ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ "ದೇವರ ದರ್ಶನದ ಭಾಗ್ಯ ನನಗಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೆ ಬಡವರ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ಆ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಸದಾ ಋಣಿ" ಎಂದ. ರಾಮಪ್ಪ ನಕ್ಕ, ಆದರೆ ಭೀಮಪ್ಪ ನಗಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಮನದಲ್ಲೇ ತಿರುಪತಿ ತಿಮ್ಮಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಕೈ ಮುಗಿದ. 

A HELPING HAND IS MORE THAN JUST GOD'S DARSHAN

The Darshan of God is just one aspect of helping the poor and defenceless. This is the main idea of the narrative. All religions say the same thing, so why do we still have terrorists, retaliation, and religious conflicts? When will these problematic individuals be reached by this straightforward solution? 

I wrote this tale for Architect Sanmathy, a classmate and close friend. We kept in touch with our WhatsApp group. I once brought up Leo Tolstoy's narrative when someone spoke about the value of helping the poor. I was unable to share the original tale with her, and she was unaware of it. Rather than translating the story exactly, I wrote a brief Kannada version. Unfortunately, she passed away before I could send her the same story.

I am recounting an incident that occurred almost eight decades ago.  Our nation was not as developed at the time as it is now.

 The town where Ramappa and Bhimappa lived was close to Bangalore.  Ramappa was wealthy, unconcerned with money, and an ardent devotee of God.  Bhimappa, his ally, was an ordinary person—not particularly wealthy, but also not impoverished.  He was a kind and spiritual man.

The goal of both Ramappa Bhimappa's lives was "to visit Tirupati on foot and make a Darshan of God."  Travelling to Tirupati was one of the most difficult tasks at the time.  One needs to make savings enough cash and clothes.  Only the wealthy used to travel on bullock carts because there were not any automobiles.  In the past, people who preferred to walk would stop at villages along the route.  Villagers were also quite courteous and used to pay extra attention to pilgrims travelling to Tirupati.  The time has finally come to grant Ramappa and Bhimappa their aspirations.  They headed out on their pilgrimage.

Because he was wealthy, Ramappa had plenty of money, while Bhimappa just kept a small amount.  On their journey, they would spend the night in locales.  They used to aid the underprivileged in communities as part of their pilgrimage.   Hotels did not exist as they do now.  The guests were lavishly fed by farmers.  Those who could afford it were giving back a portion of their service fees.  Consequently, Ramappa and Bhimappa's travel proceeded successfully.

They chose to rest when they arrived at a little settlement in the late evening.  The village was in dreadful shape, and the residents were struggling for their lives.  In exchange for donating some cash, Ramappa and Bheemappa were able to obtain some food.  Ramappa prepared to start his journey the following day because his goal was to reach Tirupathi.  However, Bheemappa was deeply moved by the villagers' plight and made the decision to remain for a few more days in order to assist them.  Ramappa received a sum of money from Bheemappa for offering to God on his behalf.  Bheemappa remained in the village when Ramappa left.

It brought Bheemappa joy to serve those impoverished villagers.  He helped sick people recover, provided them lifestyle advice, and encouraged them to take charge of their own lives.  After a few days, the villagers were much better thanks to Bheemappa's assistance.  His desire of visiting Thirupathi was not realised since he used the majority of his leftover funds to help the locals.

Ramappa was already at his village when he returned.  He made the pilgrimage to Thirupathi successfully.  He accused Bheemappa of remaining in that impoverished area after learning that he had not travelled to Thirupathi.  He informed Bheemappa that the most important thing is God's darshan.  However, Bheemappa never felt regret because, in his view, helping the underprivileged was far more important than receiving God's blessing.  He presented his Pranams to God Thimmappa of Thirupathi and conveyed a heartfelt thanks to God for providing the chance to help the underprivileged.
