Sri Narasimha Jayanti is the auspicious appearance day of Lord Narasimha, the half-man, half-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Narasimha appeared at dusk on the Shukla Chaturdashi, the fourteenth day of the month of Vaishakha.

The Supreme Lord appeared as Narasimha to protect His dear devotee Prahlada from the persecutions of his demoniac father, Hiranyakashipu. By performing severe penances, Hiranyakashipu had received a benediction from Lord Brahma that he could not be killed by any living entity created by Brahma (whether demigod, demon, human being, or animal), within or outside a residence, during the day or at night, on the land or in the sky, by any weapon.

Endowed with this special benediction, Hiranyakashipu became extremely powerful. He conquered all directions and established his supremacy over everyone else. He was inimical towards Lord Vishnu and His devotees. On the contrary, his son Prahlada was a great devotee of the Lord Vishnu from the beginning of his life. Hence, Hiranyakashipu made several attempts to kill his son in different ways, but every time, the Lord rescued him.

Finally, the Lord assumed a unique half-man half-lion form (this form is neither a human being nor an animal) by emerging from a pillar. He killed Hiranyakashipu in the evening (neither day nor night), in the doorway of the assembly hall (neither within nor outside any residence), keeping the demon on His lap (neither land nor sky) and tearing the demon’s body to pieces with His nails (neither by a weapon nor by any entity – dead or alive). Thus, the Lord effortlessly killed Hiranyakashipu while satisfying all the conditions of Brahma’s boon.

Through this wonderful pastime, the Supreme Lord showed that no one can surpass His intelligence and cheat Him. If the Lord wants to kill someone, nobody can save him, however intelligent and powerful he may be. Similarly, if the Lord wants to save someone, nobody can kill him.

Devotees observe fasting till dusk and offer prayers to Lord Narasimha to seek His mercy and protection from all kinds of dangers and disturbances in their spiritual path. An elaborate abhisheka is performed to the Lord in the early morning and the evening. 

ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹ ಜಯಂತಿಯು ಭಗವಾನ್ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಅರ್ಧ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಅರ್ಧ ಸಿಂಹ ರೂಪದ ಭಗವಾನ್ ನರಸಿಂಹನ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಅವತಾರ ದಿನವಾಗಿದೆ. ವೈಶಾಖ ಮಾಸದ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯಂದು (ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ದಿನ) ಮುಸ್ಸಂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಗವಾನ್ ನರಸಿಂಹನು ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು.

ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಭಕ್ತ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ ತಂದೆ ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವಿನ ಕಿರುಕುಳದಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನು ನರಸಿಂಹನಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಕಠಿಣ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ, ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪು ಭಗವಾನ್ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಿಂದ ವರವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದನು, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಿಂದ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಯಾವುದೇ ಜೀವಿ (ಅರ್ಧದೇವತೆ, ರಾಕ್ಷಸ, ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ), ಮನೆಯ ಒಳಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಹೊರಗೆ, ಹಗಲು ಅಥವಾ ರಾತ್ರಿ, ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ, ಯಾವುದೇ ಆಯುಧದಿಂದ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುವಂತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. 

ಈ ವಿಶೇಷ ವರದಾನದಿಂದ, ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿಯಾದನು. ಅವನು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದನು ಮತ್ತು ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮೇಲೆ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಬಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದನು. ಅವನು ವಿಷ್ಣು ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಭಕ್ತರ ಮೇಲೆ ದ್ವೇಷಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದನು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ, ಅವನ ಮಗ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನು ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನದ ಆರಂಭದಿಂದಲೂ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಮಹಾನ್ ಭಕ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದನು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪು ತನ್ನ ಮಗನನ್ನು ವಿವಿಧ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಲ್ಲಲು ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನು, ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿಯೂ, ಭಗವಂತ ಅವನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದನು.

ಕೊನೆಗೆ, ಭಗವಂತನು ಒಂದು ಕಂಬದಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ಅರ್ಧ-ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಅರ್ಧ-ಸಿಂಹ ರೂಪವನ್ನು (ಈ ರೂಪವು ಮನುಷ್ಯನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ) ಧರಿಸಿದನು. ಅವನು ಸಂಜೆ (ಹಗಲು ಅಥವಾ ರಾತ್ರಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ), ಸಭೆಯ ದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ (ಯಾವುದೇ ನಿವಾಸದ ಒಳಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಹೊರಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ) ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು, ರಾಕ್ಷಸನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮಡಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡನು (ಭೂಮಿ ಅಥವಾ ಆಕಾಶವಲ್ಲ) ಮತ್ತು ರಾಕ್ಷಸನ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಉಗುರುಗಳಿಂದ (ಆಯುಧದಿಂದ ಅಥವಾ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವದಿಂದ - ಸತ್ತ ಅಥವಾ ಜೀವಂತ) ಹರಿದು ಹಾಕಿದನು. ಹೀಗೆ, ಭಗವಂತನು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ವರದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಷರತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಿ ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವನ್ನು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಕೊಂದನು.

ಈ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕಾಲಕ್ಷೇಪದ ಮೂಲಕ, ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನು ತನ್ನ ಬುದ್ಧಿಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಮೀರಿಸಿ ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಯಾರಿಂದಲೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸಿದನು. ಭಗವಂತ ಯಾರನ್ನಾದರೂ ಕೊಲ್ಲಲು ಬಯಸಿದರೆ, ಅವನು ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಯಾರೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ, ಭಗವಂತ ಯಾರನ್ನಾದರೂ ಉಳಿಸಲು ಬಯಸಿದರೆ, ಯಾರೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.

ಭಕ್ತರು ಮುಸ್ಸಂಜೆಯವರೆಗೆ ಉಪವಾಸ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ತಮ್ಮ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ರೀತಿಯ ಅಪಾಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ತೊಂದರೆಗಳಿಂದ ಆತನ ಕರುಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮುಂಜಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಜೆ ಭಗವಂತನಿಗೆ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾದ ಅಭಿಷೇಕವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
